Oxidation reaction kinetics on transition metal surfaces observed by real-time photoelectron spectroscopy

Ogawa, Shuichi*; Zhang, B.*; Yoshigoe, Akitaka; Takakuwa, Yuji*

Vacuum and Surface Science, 64(5), p.218 - 223, 2021/05

The oxidation reaction kinetics on Ti(0001) and Ni(111) surfaces were observed by real-time photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation to measure the oxidation state and oxide thickness. After the Ti(0001) surface was wholly covered by TiO with a thickness of 1.2 nm, the rapid growth of n-type TiO$$_{2}$$ proceeded through the diffusion of Ti$$^{4+}$$ ions to the TiO$$_{2}$$ surface at 400$$^{circ}$$C. A saturation of oxygen uptake on the TiO surface indicates that the O$$_{2}$$ sticking coefficient on the TiO surface is negligibly small and the segregation of Ti to the TiO surface is a trigger to initiate the TiO$$_{2}$$ growth. On the Ni(111) surface at 350$$^{circ}$$C, a thermally stable NiO$$_{x}$$ proceeded preferentially and then the growth of p-type NiO was initiated. The time evolution of NiO thickness was represented by a logarithmic growth model, where the NiO growth is governed by the electron tunneling to the NiO surface.

Valence fluctuation phenomena in rare-earth intermetallic compounds have attracted attention because the quantum criticality of the valence transition has been proposed theoretically. Recently, it was found that $$beta$$-YbAlB$$_4$$ shows quantum criticality without tuning and has a strong mixed-valence state. In this study, we measured the magnetization curve and X-ray magnetoabsorption in $$alpha$$-YbAl$$_{1-x}$$Fe$$_x$$B$$_4$$ ($$x=0.115$$), which is a locally isostructural polymorph of $$beta$$-YbAlB$$_4$$. The magnetization and X-ray experiments were performed in fields up to 55 and 40 T, respectively. A small increase in the Yb valence was observed at fields where the magnetization curve exhibited a change in slope.

Localized 5$$f^2$$-electron states in UPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$

Metoki, Naoto; Haga, Yoshinori; Yamamoto, Etsuji; Matsuda, Masaaki*

no journal, ,

We observed clear crystal field excitations of UPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$, indicating the localized character of 5f electrons with the singlet ground state of U$$^{4+}$$(5$$f^2$$). The excitation spectra and susceptibility can be explained with a similar level scheme of PrPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ with 10 times larger energy scale due to a larger itinerancy of 5$$f$$ electrons. The valence (5$$f$$ electron number) rapidly changes from U$$^{4+}$$ to Np$$^{3+}$$. This valence change may play important role for the heavy fermion superconductivity in NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$.
